NRM Government Spurs Milk Production Boom in Kazo District

Kazo District, Uganda – The National Resistance Movement (NRM) government has played a key role in transforming milk production in Kazo District and across Uganda, following a successful campaign to sensitize farmers on crossbreeding and the grazing of exotic cattle breeds.

Today, it is estimated that Kazo district collects over 419,573 liters of milk daily, thanks to the widespread adoption of modern dairy farming practices. According to official district statistics, milk production is distributed across the sub-counties as follows:
Rwemikoma: 66,560 liters
Nkungu: 47,000 liters
Engari: 58,424 liters
Migina: 17,000 liters
Buremba: 39,400 liters
Kazo Sub-county: 32,400 liters
Burunga: 76,289 liters
Kyampangara: 22,000 liters
Kanoni: 20,500 liters
Kazo Town Council: 40,000 liters

Despite seasonal fluctuations, Kazo District now has 105 milk collection centers and 38 dairy cooperatives, further boosting its dairy industry and improving livelihoods for local farmers.

Historically, Uganda’s milk production was minimal especially in the Ankole region where many farmers reared indigenous Ankole long-horned cattle primarily for prestige rather than milk. However, this narrative has shifted under the leadership of President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, whose administration has aggressively promoted productive livestock farming.

During interviews with district officials at Kazo district headquarters, leaders encouraged farmers to fully embrace modern agricultural practices.

Zefrine Tumwesigye, the district Production Officer, noted that the government continues to train farmers in modern methods of dairy farming.

“Quality milk is essential,” Tumwesigye emphasized. “It helps increase our market value and opens up better pricing opportunities for farmers.”

Keith Bahemuka, the Deputy Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) for Kazo District, advised farmers to regularly consult agricultural extension workers for technical guidance, particularly in managing animal diseases and improving productivity.

“Mindset change is key,” Bahemuka added. “Many people in Kazo keep large herds of cattle but fail to realize significant milk output. Innovation in farming must be embraced.”

Ham Rubinika, Secretary for Production and district Councilor for Kyampangara Sub- County who is also a famer, acknowledged the sharp rise in milk output. He expressed optimism that milk prices currently ranging between UGX 1,100 and UGX 1,400 per litter, depending on the season would increase to better benefit farmers.

Fred Ntungire, Vice Chairperson of Kazo District, commended President Museveni’s role in transforming Uganda’s agricultural sector.

“We are now targeting international markets for Ugandan milk, which is a commendable and strategic initiative,” Ntungire said.

Meanwhile, Rev. Samuel Mugisha Katugunda, the LC5 Chairperson for Kazo District, praised the NRM government for its continued support. He emphasized that the President’s current focus is on expanding market access for Ugandan milk and called on the public to embrace government programs that support modern farming.

He also thanked farmers who work closely with district leadership in combating livestock diseases, which remain a threat to the dairy sector.
