Kazo Leaders Unite to Protect District from Livestock Diseases
The Kazo District leadership led by Assistant RDC Mushabe Gershorm and LC5 Chairperson Rev. Samuel Mugisha Katugunda today held a meeting with key stakeholders including leaders from eight sub-counties, two town councils, livestock traders and farmers.
The meeting aimed at harmonizing efforts to prevent the spread of livestock diseases into Kazo district from neighboring districts.
While chairing the meeting on behalf of the RDC, Assistant RDC Mushabe Gershorm urged livestock traders and butcher operators to ensure safe slaughter practices by testing all animals before they are slaughtered. He warned traders against selling meat from dead animals commonly known as Kidumure noting that the practice risks causing serious diseases among consumers.
“Report anyone selling meat from dead animals and report all suspects involved in stealing animals,” Mushabe emphasized.
Acting District Veterinary Officer Nabimanya Alfred cautioned farmers against complacency, revealing that some neighboring districts are currently battling Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD). He called on local leaders, extension workers, traders and security personnel to work together to stop the illegal movement of livestock without permits or proper authorization.
LC5 Chairperson Rev. Samuel Mugisha Katugunda urged security teams, veterinary officers and local leaders to intensify the fight against unauthorized animal movements, warning that such activities put the district at high risk.
“It would be disastrous for Kazo, if Foot-and-Mouth Disease returns given how severely it affects our district economy,” he said.
Responding on behalf of butcher operators, Geoffrey Byamukama expressed readiness to cooperate with district authorities to eliminate the sale of dead meat.
Another trader, Matovu Muhammad, encouraged colleagues to abide by laws that protect both livestock and consumers.
