Kazo District Disseminates Health Care Waste Management Guidelines and Welcomes New DHO

Kazo District, Uganda — The Kazo District Local Government Health Department today held a dissemination meeting on health care waste management and key performance indicators for environmental health workers. The meeting took place in the council hall at the district headquarters and was chaired by the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), Hajji Badru Mayanja Majwala.

The meeting brought together heads of the district health department, district environmental health staff and health facility in-charges. Participants discussed best practices in health care waste management, performance indicators for environmental health workers and strategies aligned with the National Health Care Waste Management Strategy.

Addressing the meeting, Hajji Badru Mayanja Majwala informed members that the district has officially recruited a substantive District Health Officer (DHO). He expressed confidence that the new DHO’s experience would strengthen technical leadership and improve service delivery within the health sector.

The CAO thanked Ms. Esther Bully, who had been serving as Acting District Health Officer, for her dedication and commendable service during the transition period. He noted that her leadership contributed significantly to the stability and performance of the department and called upon the entire health team to continue supporting the new DHO to achieve the district’s health goals.

Hajji Badru also congratulated the health department for Kazo district’s outstanding performance in the Annual Health Performance Report for the Financial Year 2024/2025, where the district ranked 13th nationally. He encouraged the team to maintain and improve this performance, particularly through effective participation in the Single Digital District initiative.

The District Health Officer, Dr. Edgar Kansiime, called on all health department staff to work closely with him, emphasizing teamwork and coordination. He assured the meeting of his readiness to serve and to advance the district’s health agenda.

In her remarks, Assistant DHO Esther Bully thanked the Chief Administrative Officer for his leadership and commitment to strengthening the health department. She expressed appreciation for the recruitment of a substantive DHO, noting that this would provide long-term stability and improved performance in the district’s health services.

The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to strengthening health care waste management practices and improving environmental health performance across Kazo district.
