Kazo district has today joined the rest of the country in marking the end of Sanitation Week and commemorating World Water Day 2026 with a vibrant event held at Bugarihe Primary School in Rwemikoma Sub-county.
The annual National Sanitation Week provides a platform for government and partners to mobilize communities raise awareness and showcase innovations aimed at achieving Sustainable Development Goal 6.2, which focuses on ensuring access to adequate and equitable sanitation and hygiene for all by 2030. This year’s theme, “Accelerating Safely Managed Sanitation for a Healthier Uganda,” was observed alongside the World Water Day theme, “Water and Gender.”
Kazo district celebrations attracted district leaders, technical staff, community members and schools, all emphasizing the importance of clean water, proper sanitation and hygiene in improving public health and livelihoods.
The Assistant Resident District Commissioner, Gershom Mushabe, who officiated as chief guest, planted a tree at the school and urged residents to prioritize sanitation, particularly the construction and proper use of toilets. He also addressed public health concerns, including anthrax outbreaks, warning against improper disposal of dead animals. Mushabe further called on communities to support government development projects by offering land and cautioned against encroachment on public resources such as dams.
Representing the lc5 chairperson of Kazo district, Rev.Samuel Mugisha Katugunda, the Vice Chairperson Fred Ntugire emphasized the strong link between health and development. He encouraged residents to maintain cleanliness through proper waste disposal and commended organizers for involving schools in the initiative.
The district speaker, Dan Bwamunyoga, called on parents and communities to actively participate in development efforts, including donating land for government projects to improve service delivery.
Speaking at the event, district water officer Engineer Tugume Julius reaffirmed the district’s commitment to expanding access to clean and safe water through ongoing water projects. Meanwhile, district health inspector Ndyaguma Laban highlighted the importance of the “Water and Gender” theme in promoting inclusive and safe sanitation practices.
Officials noted that the district-level celebrations held on April 15, 2026, follow the national World Water Day event that took place earlier in March in Kabarole district.
The event concluded with renewed calls for community participation, behavioral change and strengthened collaboration among stakeholders to ensure a healthier and more sustainable future for all.
